Andy slams train fare rises

In response to today’s increase in train fares, Andy Sawford, MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire said:

“These train fare increases are simply unfair.

A cost of a single, off-peak ticket to London from Corby is now £44.50. This is a 6% increase on 2012 prices. Local people are also worried about car parking fees at the stations increasing at shocking rates.

All this is happening at a time when real wages are being squeezed.

David Cameron promised he would limit fare rises to one per cent above inflation, which should have seen fare rises capped at 4.2 per cent. In Corby and East Northamptonshire, the Prime Minister has, yet again, failed to deliver on one of his promises.

The Labour party have pledged to force train companies to limit future New Year fare rises to a strict cap set by Ministers”.
