Youth unemployment now at 9.5%

Youth unemployment - March 2013 - 3

I am very concerned about the shocking rise in youth unemployment in Corby and East Northamptonshire in recent months and have been pressing the government for action, as well as working with the councils and local businesses.

Youth unemployment is far higher, and rising faster, in Corby and East Northamptonshire when compared to both the East Midlands and the rest of the UK. In Corby and East Northamptonshire, now nearly 1 in ever 10 young people is out of work.

The table below contains the official figures from the House of Commons library

Corby & East Northants East Midlands UK
Dec-12 705 8.2 28,880 6.7 405,115 6.8
Jan-13 725 8.5 30,025 6.9 420,050 7.1
Feb-13 780 9.1 31,605 7.3 435,450 7.3
Mar-13 815 9.5 31,145 7.2 425,820 7.2

There is an obvious need for Labour’s Job’s Guarantee Scheme which will guarantee real jobs for 100,000 young people. The government was also wrong to cut the Future Jobs Fund when it came to office.  This was really helping young people in Corby and East Northamptonshire to find work.

The overall point though is that there isn’t any growth in the economy.  I spoke about this in Parliament again this week setting out ideas for how we can get the economy growing so that more jobs are created.
